Director of Handbells: Wilma Draves
A native of Texas, Wilma Draves attended the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque) where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Piano Performance in 1953. While at UNM, Wilma was named "Student Director" of the UNM Mixed Choir and cites this as having helped her greatly during her 29-year career as a public school teacher, first as a junior high school choral director in Albuquerque and then as a Senior High School English/Choral Music teacher in Palos Verdes, California.
Wilma joined the handbell choir at her Palos Verdes church and rang with them for 10 years. Upon retirement in 1990, Dave and Wilma moved to Sedona and became members of the Church of the Red Rocks where she started a 3-octave handbell choir. The Handbell Choir has grown in both size and skill since then and now consists of 5 octaves of Schulmeric bells and 4 octaves of chimes.
Wilma notes, "The challenge of tackling new handbell music each year brings great joy to us and we hope we can continue to learn and grow musically into the indefinite future." The congregation would wholeheartedly agree.
